7:35 pm - A meme

Paul Verlaine (1844 - 1896)

10:45 pm - Locked to the Order and Allies
His Lorship hasn't really seen fit to call me much recently. I've been busy trying to hold the Ministry together so that there actually is something left when this is all over because otherwise what's the point. You do need to have power over something, and a smouldering pike and some scavengers isn't really grand enough to suit my tastes. If I'm not there, it's at the Manor, trying to get some rest and sheltering behind its blood wards.

However, on the occasions when I have been summoned to explain why we still haven't found Potter, or Granger, or even a Weasley - and there are so many of them - I have noticed that there seem to be more Inferi around Hogwarts. So I made discreet enquiries by slipping one of my brothers of the mask soem veritaserum, asking him all sorts of awkward questions and then Oblivating him and he told me that they've been arriving in ones and twos, some wandering out of the woods, others coming up from the subdungeons where the dead from the invasion have been thrown.

I must say, this looks to be something of an ominous turn. At this rate, the dead will outnumber the living.

His Lordship is being as close lipped as a man can be with a face like that. I'd say he was hiding something, but he always does. He's never been noted for telling us all the whole story. Not that we'd believe him if he did. Still, even for a paranoid tyrant, he's being secretive. And if he ever reads that, my head is going to be mounted at Hogwarts gates

He seems to be holding captives, which is unlike him. He likes to play with them a while, but then they are discarded. Not this time. He's keeping them in two groups - one is in the remainder of Gryffindor tower. Mudbloods Muggleborns, mostly, I gather. His Lordship has said that they are not to be harmed, but they aren't allowed to come into contact with the other group, held in the Infirmary.

As for them, oh, as for them - I never thought he would actually use the cauldron against Purebloods, but he has. Four of them - they've been stripped of their powers, reduced to nothing more than Squibs. That makes even my blood run cold. It's one thing to face death or torture, but to have one's magic removed?/ There are six in each group, I believe.

And Fenrir is up to his tricks again. He's been given Muggles to play with. God alone knows what horrrors he's visiting on them. Dinner, mostly. Rumour has it that he's been seen coming out of the dungeons once or twice with something under his arm, probably the remains of his meals.

9:24 am - Private - Everything will change
The die has been cast, and all that, and only time will tell whether I have chosen the right side for me and for my idiot son.

It has been a long journey to this point, with twists and turns along the way, and always there is this nagging doubt that there were better ways to do things, more elegant ways, that could have been employed, whether a different word in a diferent ear might have avoided all this unpleasantness. Occasionally, one feels as if trapped in a book wrtten by a narrator with no style, no sense of what is right and proper, and who doesn't seem to quite approve of Malfoys. Traditional, conventional muggle morailty dictates that the bed should end badly, and the good end well, and I can feel the cold finger of fate running down my spine. I am not entirely sure I have been a good man, but I have been a decorative one, and I can't help thinking about Severus' speech about the Dark Arts and them being many hydra-headed etc - he does tend to wax poetical after the second bottle of elf made wine. On that basis, being bad gives one a definite edge in the survival stakes. If the Dark Lord can come back from the dead, I'm sure I can manage to effect the same trick.

It wouldn't surprise me to know that Severus had taken his own steps to secure immortality, or at least a second life - announcing to the world that you know how to stopper death is hardly subtle is it?

And so I shall raise a toast to all I have known - good, bad, or indifferent - we shall not see their like again.

And then I shall raise a glass to the future, whether as flesh and blood or portrait there will still be plotting to be done, and rumour has it that the Malfoy ancestors managed to create a spell that allows a portrait to enjoy life to the full in the afterlife.

Well, you wouldn't expect anything less from us.

Your good health, my dears.

And mine, of course.

Is it me, or has there been the slightest bit of a mistake in the despatching of enemies?

His Lordship is in a good mood.

Oddly, this doesn't necessarily translate into greater safety, as Severus can assure you. A Dark Lord in a good mood, is a Dark Lord in a dangerous mood. It does tend to make him exapnsive though, so one merely has to offer congratulations on his brilliance several times a minute in order to gather information.

The decimation of the Inner Circle is leading to some competition for advancement, and I have never seen such a display of boot licking from a group of individuals before. To be blunt, I don't think He needs to clean his shoes every again, and my own, beautifully-shod feet are not far behind. No style, Severus, my friend. No style at all.

Some little shit thought he could challenge me, after His Lordship's last explanation of his displeasure. His Lordship certainly found it amusing when I transfigured them into a footstool. Apparently a very well-padded footstool whichHe immediately commandeered and put to good use.

I am in some far-flung corner of England, which is damp, and smells of shit. I believe they call it the countryside. I'm aware this doesn't narrow it down very much, but there were one or two cows milling around outside. They were black and white. Enormous sodding things, with big, brown eyes and a very bad temper. My little group of Associates had some little difficulty in removing the damned things from the field in which we were supposed to be conducting our ritual.

Did you know Moibilicoprus doesn't work on a cow? I do now.

There are about ten of us here, manipulating ley lines. First, we constrict them, and then channel the power into reservoirs, releasing the energy in controlled pulses.

Well, that's the theory. When I say controlled, it took three attempts before Henshie managed to direct the thing properly, and he was hit by the backwash on one memorable occasion. That did clear the cows from the field. In pieces.

No one has the faintest idea how to conduct a basic Dark Arts ritual these days - I blame the teachers.

I've no idea what he's doing with these bursts of power; he wasn't forthcoming on the issue. Whatever it is, it's big, and it sucks up power like a Slytherin - it takes it all, and gives none back.

I have also been asked to investigate blood lines, put together a list of Wizarding families, and the degrees of their blood. I don't think I need tell you the implications of that. Unfortunately, the exigenxies of this current task are such that I may not be able to start on that for a week or so, but after that....

Locked to Severus Snape

When the cow exploded, Henshie got hit in the face with the less fragrant parts of the beast, usually located around the tail area.

I haven't laughed as much in years.

9:58 pm - Private / Locked to Draco
I despatched the most anodyne book on wards that I could find to Miss Lovegood via the accommodation address.

And i shall have to give some thought to a ward that partakes of dissolution. Such a shame that I am restricted from using the Dark Arts. De Braisch's wardings would have been so apposite, so elegant, and so very.. unpleasant. I'm sure members of the Order would have been very unhappy at what they did, though a ward that melts the flesh off the bones of an intruder over the course of several weeks is the sort of ward that tends to be effective.

The Civardi will have to do. The blood of a Malfoy, pure for hundreds of years, in a solution of aqua regiae, distributed around the perimeter. I've begun preparing it - taking a small amount of blood each night, and a replenishing potion to build up my strength for the next donation. No one can deny the irony of my blood being spilled in protecting whatever secret Severus isn't telling me about. I have used the right arm. I don't know if the presence of the Dark Mark could or would affect the efficacy of the warding, make it more susceptible to dark wizards, so I intend to test it out on the Summer House over the next couple of days. If I'm going to betray my Lord and Master, I intend to do it effectively.

I have investigated the situation as regards Floo powder and / or its constituents.

I regret to inform you that the stores appear to be managed by the last honest man in the Ministry - and how that happened I have no idea - and I will be unable to oblige you in the near future. I will continue to see if there is some way to find a source, but as matters stand it may be some time.

I also have a book that Miss Lovegood wanted to borrow; is there somewhere I could send it that would be safe? I expect Professor McGonagall or Professor Snape would like to check to make sure that it isn't dangerous, illegal or immoral examine it first....

The task of rebuilding St Mungo's is beginning. That is to say, a committee has been formed to discuss the necessity of rebuilding St Mungo's. Something may yet be resolved before the next Millenia

Erm, someone has volunteered to help me set up wards that require virgins.

I assume they don't actually know what they are offering, and that this isn't some sort of offer?

1:17 am - Locked to the Order: I'm fine, thanks for asking
I have returned from a couple of days sequestered with the Dark Lord. I think we can infer that he was not best pleased with matters.

Fortunately, he hasn't discovered my role. The barriers held, barely, and that because he was more interested in sniffing out my fear and terror than anything else. He remains rather puzzled as to events, and suspects your involvement. He seems a little disturbed that you were able to pull such a daring raid off, and is redoubling his vigilance in all areas.

Be very careful - the faintest lapse in security, and he will be upon you.

Private

It's taken me a whole day to stop shaking enough to be able to enter something into this abominable thing.

He doesn't like failure, and when he is presented with it, he reminds people of his displeasure forcibly. I think I can be grateful that my brains aren't leaking out of my ears - cruciatus is a clumsy means of enforcing one's will, compared to the elegance of Imperius. One slip, and your victim is nothing more than blancmange, and the only future I could see stretching ahead of me was one involving being spoon fed, and having my arse wiped by house elves.

It took me several very nasty minutes to persuade him that Aidle, as chief Auror in charge of the whole guard detail, was to blame. He may count himself lucky not to have to offer explanations in person. He wasn't in the mood to listen.

Christ, I hurt.

5:00 pm - Private / Locked to the Order
I did think that my romantic life had taken a turn for the better this week. A rather attractive young lady of the brunette persuasion made it clear that she would like to be on intimate terms with the Minister. Unfortunately, it was the Minister that she had her sights on - I don't see why either, it's rarely where the real power is concentrated, but merely the forum in which the power struggles take place, and it's bloody hard work.

She did say something about the Minister's Balls, but we were talking at cross purposes there for a while. I hardly think we're in a position to throw a party at the moment. Who would be on the guest list, for one thing? Death Eaters or the Order?

I told the young women that, whilst her offer was tempting, that she ought to come back in a few years when she'd mastered the art of blackmail, treachery and the pursuit of power at all costs. Then, and only then, might she have something to temp me with. She seemed a trifle disconcerted - apparently luxuriant hair and overdeveloped breasts had meant that she'd never been refused before - but also rather thoughtful. It's always nice to know that one has set people's feet on the right path at an early age.

Draco..... I despair. One hardly knows what to do with a boy who chooses to insult his only hope of getting out of this business alive.

I seem to have acquired an assorted collection of Death Eaters.

Unfortunately, following a little discussion with my erstwhile Lord and Master, it rather appears not to be precisely the case.

Some while back, it appears He acquired a motley collection of resistance fighters - not related to the Order, I believe, though you'd know better than I. Placed under Imperio, they were despatched to Hogsmead and made to march up and down singing his praises, which amused Him immensely, and had the added bonus of attracting the attention of an Elite Group of Aurors.

Quite who this Elite Group were is shrouded in mystery, so I suspect they may have been so elite as to not actually be working for the Mnistry, if you catch my drift.

The upshot of all this, is that I have a group of 'Death Eaters' to be summarily disposed of. The dementors are licking their lips at the thought.....

I take it that the experiments were encouraging - does this mean that you wish me to acquire a live specimen? Because there is one young person in particular who is annoying me with his presumption, and could well benefit from being experimented upon.

I shall pass on your offer to Draco. I have little hope that he will have the sense to take you up on it, but I shall have done all I can.

Locked to Draco Malfoy

I have spoken to Severus about continuing your Occlumency lessons - he is willing, if cautious. It is a matter for you whether you avail yourself of the offer.

I can assure you, it will be safe for you to do so. It has been suggested that that Manor would be a sensible place to meet.

Private

There are times when even a hardened Death Eater wishes to pluck his robes up and go Ew! There's something utterly repellent about playing around with dead people's limbs, a reaction that was only made worse by the incongruity of the floral theme of the decor. Perhaps it was the chintz that turned my stomach, rather than the cold-blooded prodding.

Whatever he was doing - and explanations were not entirely forthcoming - required the strongest wards one can produce without a blood sacrifice, and I had omitted to provide the necessary goat for those. Then he produced this lens from a box, and proceeded to hold it over the arms muttering away to himself, only punctuating his mutterings with peremptory commands to me, and swearing to himself.

It hurt like hell when he held it over my Mark, stinging with the kind of backlash He would put into a particularly urgnet summoning, the sort that makes your mouth dry until you can work out who is going to be on the receiving end of that bout of temper.

Though Severus was very thoughtful in bringing me several potions that will help me in my search for the second Mrs Malfoy, though he assures me none of the Order members will do. Having met them, I can see his point. None of them really had the requisite air of grace and authority, though I suppose a temporary liaison with someone might enhance my standing after the war.

The prospect of dalliance with Minerva McGonagall makes my blood run cold.

Though the fashion seems to be to take up with the youngsters in the group - on the one hand I do wish that people would be more careful with their locks for the sake of security; on the other, it's the only way I ever really find out anything.

I received your Owl, with its attendant potions, and consumed them immediately. I'm disappointed to find they weren't poison, which I would have happily taken at that stage. I hadn't believed that there was anything more painful than Crucio but this hangover achieved that feat. My father is probably turning in his grave at the loss of the best brandy.

I find I really can't give a brass knut for that.

I seem to recall that there was some mention of me advertising for a new wife in the Daily Prophet. I think that was the most sensible suggestion of a series of rather foolish exchanges, though I find myself unable to read my posts. It seems to be written in gobblydegook.

Draco has

The damage caused by the attacks is extensive and I've spent the last 24 hours trying to sort the damned mess out. At this rate there won't be any Wizarding World left to rule - doesn't he know how much this is going to cost in raised taxes? Where am I going to find the money for the bloody repairs?

And I appear to have aquired a ragtag selection of Death Eaters - some of whom are very much dead, and some of whom are still alive and really don't seem to be that familiar. Not that the Dark Lord necessarily keeps me informed on matters of recruitment. Draco for instance. Still, I shall have to investigate further.

Private

The destruction is immense. I think we're supposed to be impressed. People are certainly terrified. Even my assistant was suspiciously red-eyed today, and hadn't even got the heart to ruin my tea. Worried about a cousin of hers, so I told her to make an enquiry and sign it with my name. Not that I'm softening to people, not even with this rather soothing potion that Severus provided which makes everything delightfully distant - I've barely wanted to Crucio anyone for hours. No, there were very good, sensible reasons I should choose to have the woman on my side.

Not least the possibility of a decent cup of tea. I think we're all going to need that from now on.

St Mungo's is nothing more than a smoking ruin, and we're running emergency medical services out of nothing more sophisticated than a warehouse kindly provided by an anonymous donor, which I may allow the press to find out is me. The old building will have to be gutted of course, once the site is cleared. They're still bringing out bodies, though a lot fewer than one would expect, and it still hasn't been made safe.

The Prophet want a statement, because the Press has a right to know, even though there are a thousand and one things that I could be doing that are more important than talking to that august organ. Like talking to Gringott's about a Ministry overdraft to pay for the rebuilding.

On second thoughts, perhaps the press do have a right to know.
